Not all parts of the world are fortunate enough to have beautiful little hummingbirds buzzing around the garden, so if you do, keep them around!

While hummingbirds can survive on what nature alone provides them with, a hummingbird feeder definitely helps them out on their daily journey. You also get the benefit of watching these beautiful little creatures zip around the garden, which is why we’ll be showing you the top feeder choices in our guide below.

If you’re not sure what to look for as you shop, we have all of the tips and tricks you’ll need to help attract the little hummers right where you want them.

What Do Hummingbirds Like?

One of the most important things to remember as you choose the best hummingbird feeder is to get what will most likely appeal to them and not you.

Some of the really cute feeders may look great in the garden but do nothing when it comes to attracting hummingbirds.

Here are a few tips to help you choose something that the little hummers will enjoy visiting:

  • Perch. Flapping those wings all day can tire out a hummingbird, so getting a feeder with a perch for them to rest on will definitely appeal to them.
  • Number of Feeding Stations. If you live in an area swarming with hummingbirds, then you’ll probably want some extra feeding stations for them.

Most feeders have four, which is great for those if you who only have a few hummers stop by during hummingbird season, but if you find that they’re often peeping and pecking at each other to get a spot at the trough, get one with more feeding stations.

(You could also set up several feeders in the same area so they are more spread out).

  • Try Different Styles. If one style of hummingbird feeder doesn’t work, try another!

You might set up different feeders in different areas of your garden in order to see which they prefer.

Little Things Make a Big Difference

There are so many little details to take into consideration when it comes to choosing the best hummingbird feeder.

Here are some of the top tips and tricks from those of have success in attracting the hummers:

  • Bees and Ants. Certain shapes and colors can attract bees, which is one thing that will prevent hummingbirds from coming to feed.

Ideally, a feeder will have no yellow parts or the shape will discourage bees from joining the party.

Same goes for ants: you don’t want them invading the feeder, so look for models with ant moats (or purchase them separately) if they become an issue.

  • Not Too Breezy. Avoid hanging the feeder in breezy areas. If it flops around too much, the hummers won’t be able to land and feed from it.
  • Color. Many assume that it is the color that attracts the hummingbird to a feeder (or a flower), and while it is true that red is a bright and attractive color that they can see, they are definitely more concerned with the contents of the feeder.

A quality nectar is going to be a deal breaker with the hummingbird. You may have managed to attract him with a fancy, flashy feeder, but if he doesn’t like what he tastes once he is there, you probably won’t see him again.

  • Cleaning. Cleaning your feeder on a regular basis is important to prevent mold and bacteria growth, so make sure you get one that you can easily clean.

All of those little nooks and crannies need to be thoroughly sterilized every now and then, so make sure you get something that doesn’t cause you to curse up a storm and just leave it as-is because it’s too much of a hassle to clean.

Get yourself some handy little pipe cleaner brushes or something similar to a mascara brush that can reach in the feeding ports.

If you live in a heavily populated hummingbird area, then you’ll love having this feeder hanging out the garden or on the terrace.

This has 10 feeding stations, a comfortable perch for them to rest on and the feeding ports are wide so that they can easily fit their beaks and tongue in. It’s wide enough that even some other birds might make a pit stop and taste the nectar!

This is a beautiful hummingbird feeder for those who have just a few little hummers buzz by for a snack on occasion.

We like that the hand blown glass feeder that will hold 30 ounces of nectar. It has four feeding stations and wide perches for the hummingbirds to land on.

The stations also have a red flower around them with a small yellow center, which makes them a little more realistic than some of the other models out there. You also get the “S” hook with it.

It’s a bit more unique than some of the other feeders because the glass has a honeycomb pattern that catches the light when it moves.

Definitely unique!

Here is a feeder with a light green glass rather than red. As we mentioned, it really is more about the quality of the nectar rather than just the bottle color, but remember that you can always add red food coloring to it if you feel that will increase your odds!

The feeding stations (there are five of them) each have a little red flower and a perch for the hummers to sit on as they feed.

You can put the glass in the dishwasher but the metal pieces will need to be washed by hand. You’ll also need to purchase the hook separately.

Not a deal breaker, but something to take into consideration as you compare and contrast models! This feeder is definitely well-made and worth the few extra bucks.

This is quite different than most feeders out there since it doesn’t have a bottle sticking up from the feeding trough.

The bowl design actually makes it easier to clean and the hummers have a better view of everything around them as they feed.

There are only four feeding ports, so you might need a few of these in the garden or on the terrace if you have numerous hummingbirds that come by.

Affordable and effective. Definitely a favorite of hummingbird lovers!

If you are in need of a feeder that holds less nectar, then this is a great choice. Large feeders are nice when you have numerous hummers that feed frequently, but if they don’t come on a regular basis, you just end up wasting the nectar.

In terms of design, this has eight feeding stations and two perch choices that encircle the entire base.

We noticed that the feeding ports aren’t as wide as some of the other ones out there, but very few have reported any problems due to this. We like that the pieces are easy to clean and disassemble, which is important for you (the nectar provider).

Some have great luck with this and others not so much. If you’re not convinced, check out the other great options on our table above!
