Cats, as we’re sure you’re well aware, can be so darn picky when it comes to doing their business indoors.

The litter, the type of litter box and the position all need to be in-sync in order for your cat to use his bathroom like clockwork.

In our handy guide below, we’ll help you find the best cat litter box by comparing and contrasting the top ones.

We also have some useful tips that might help you create the purrfect indoor restroom for even the pickiest kitties, so be sure to read everything from top to bottom!

How to Choose

There are actually quite a few small details to take into consideration when you’re comparing and contrasting litter boxes.

Remember the following:

  • Privacy. Some cats prefer more privacy when it comes to using the litter box.

If they’ve been soiling in other areas of the house and avoiding the litter box completely, then this is their way of telling you that something’s off: it could be that they want a cover, they don’t like the cover, the litter is wrong or the location is just uncomfortable.

Watch your cat closely to figure out the root of the cause.

  • Self Cleaning. While these are quite expensive, they do make the entire litter box process a whole lot easier for both you and your cat.

Some can hook right up to your cold water line in the bathroom or a laundry room so that waste gets flushed right down the tube!

If you want to be as hands-off as possible when it comes to dealing with litter and your cat’s waste, then this the ideal solution for you. These are also great for those of you who are gone most of the day and don’t have time to clean the box on a regular basis (and a clean box is very important, otherwise your kitty won’t use it).

  • High Walls. When you opt for an open litter box, remember that the wall height can make a huge difference for some cats.

If your cat doesn’t have good aim or they like having a semi-private area to do their business, then a box with high walls is the right choice for you.

Size of Cat, Number of Cats

One thing you’ll also need to remember when choosing a box is to get a box that provides your cat with enough space to move around in.

Some larger cats just can’t fit into the top-entry or hooded boxes, so you’ll need to double check the dimensions (or find out if the brand you like is available in different sizes) in order to accommodate any hefty kitties.

You should also opt for a larger box if there are multiple cats in the house.

Litter Mat

Even when you train your cat to use the litter box with a 100% success rate, problems can still occur: litter tracking, for example.

After all of the digging and burying, some brands of litter just don’t stay in the box once your cat exits, clinging to their paws and then falling off in clumps throughout your home.

If you have this type of problem, then be sure to get a litter mat to place in front of the box.

They’re usually made of PVC and come in a variety of styles. It’s simple, it’s cheap and it’s not fancy, but it’s still probably one of the best cat litter box choices out there for many cat owners.

It’s spacious, measuring 21 7/8 x 16 ¾ x 6 ¼ (inches), making it ideal for homes with multiple cats.

We definitely recommend the old-fashioned approach for those of you who are more interested in spending money on quality litter and if your cats aren’t too worried about having a privacy hood.

It’s a bit more hands on than the next option on our list (and obviously quite visible), but if you’re OK with it and your cat is OK with it, then it’s definitely a great deal.

[easyazon_image add_to_cart=”default” align=”right” asin=”B01601QF2O” cloaking=”default” height=”500″ localization=”default” locale=”US” nofollow=”default” new_window=”default” src=”https://images-na.ssl-images-amazon.com/images/I/81hM5FT6uYL._SP500_.jpg” tag=”senappblo-20″ width=”250″]

On the opposite end of the spectrum, we have the high-end, self-cleaning option: Litter Robot III.

Those of you who don’t want to see or be near the litter on a regular basis, you’re looking for something convenient, you’re willing to invest the money and you have multiple cats in the house will love this box.

It can easily service multiple cats or large cats (if you just have one).

How does it work? Simple: when they just step in, the machine senses their weight. They go about business as usual and then exit the premises, and from there, the machine takes over.

It will go through a cleaning cycle, sifting the litter out and picking up the solid waste that will be dropped into the box below.

Cat owners especially appreciate the splashguard in the front, which prevents the litter from flying out if your cat tends to dig a lot.

We realize this isn’t the right solution for everyone, but it sure does make life easier for both you and your cats!

[easyazon_image add_to_cart=”default” align=”right” asin=”B003RQVGKC” cloaking=”default” height=”500″ localization=”default” locale=”US” nofollow=”default” new_window=”default” src=”https://images-na.ssl-images-amazon.com/images/I/81lPoofl0mL._SP500_.jpg” tag=”senappblo-20″ width=”250″]

Catit has a couple of boxes on our list that we like: this one and number 4.

We’d go for this option if you’re looking for an affordable hooded box for normal sized cats or for large cats since it is available in two sizes: Jumbo or X-Large (X-large is the bigger one).

It has a handy flap on the front that helps keep the odors inside and it’s quite spacious inside.

This is a great choice for those of you with large cats or multiple cats who absolutely won’t use the litter box unless they have a privacy hood.

[easyazon_image add_to_cart=”default” align=”right” asin=”B008F5QANI” cloaking=”default” height=”500″ localization=”default” locale=”US” nofollow=”default” new_window=”default” src=”https://images-na.ssl-images-amazon.com/images/I/61Lq0vkW2WL._SP500_.jpg” tag=”senappblo-20″ width=”250″]

If you like the Catit brand but didn’t like the hooded box above, then give this one a try.

It features a handy rim around the top that protrudes slightly into the litter box, acting as a shield to help prevent litter from flying out or anything else from spraying out if your cat has bad aim.

What else can we say? The rim really makes a huge difference and cat owners love it.

It’s not the most attractive box, but then again, what litter box is?

Get one if you have a digger who doesn’t require hooded privacy.

[easyazon_image add_to_cart=”default” align=”right” asin=”B0087Y5NKS” cloaking=”default” height=”500″ localization=”default” locale=”US” nofollow=”default” new_window=”default” src=”https://images-na.ssl-images-amazon.com/images/I/41X81of0FaL._SP500_.jpg” tag=”senappblo-20″ width=”250″]

We like that this box has extra high walls and a lower step at the entrance to make it easier for cats to get in and out (we’re thinking of older kitties, here). The entryway also serves as a handy spout when you’re dumping the litter out.

That low entryway does create some issues for some cat owners, though, because while it may be easier for cats to enter, it also means that litter can still fly out of the opening.

Overall, it’s still a great purchase. Messy kitties’ messes are well contained and if you put a litter mat in front, then you’re bound to catch any small bits that manage to fly out.

The high walls, in this case, really do make the difference! The mess goes there and not on your real wall!
