Many of us still prefer the traditional dog “tracking system” that dangles from our dog’s collar: the tag.

Do you prefer a bone-shaped tag or a paw print? A silver one or a pink one?

Whatever your preferences are, the main goal it to have your contact info handy in case your pet gets lost, which is why we’re highlighting the best dog tags for you below.

There’s more to it than picking your favorite color and shape, so refer to our guide in order to avoid buying the cheap pieces of junk that don’t last!

Materials

As a starting point, you should decide which material you want the tag to be made from. Here are the most common choices:

  • Stainless Steel. This is the most common choice and many prefer it, although it is more susceptible to rust problems.
  • Plastic. Some of the plastic tags are surprisingly durable and they make less noise than the metal ones. Check out number 2 below if you’d like to try a plastic tag.
  • Nylon Webbing. Some dog owners prefer to embroider their contact info directly onto the collar so they don’t have to use a tag. These will get dirty and won’t last as long as metal tags; however, if you’re interested, check out number 3 below.
  • Aluminum. It’s easier to read the inscription on an aluminum tag and it won’t rust, however, it’s not as strong as stainless steel.
  • Brass. Probably not the best way to go. This is a soft metal that will bend easily. The coating usually wears off, too, so stick with any of the other choices above.

Buying Information

TIP: See how the info is added to the tag:

  • Stamped. Stamped tags are slightly better than engraved tags. There is no cutting or shaving of the metal involved, which means you aren’t jeopardizing the quality. Sometimes the letters do take up more space, but if you have a wide tag this shouldn’t be an issue.
  • Engraved. Engraved tags are most popular, although the letters aren’t always engraved as deeply as a stamped tag.
  • Embossed. This is the first to wear off, so it’s best to avoid tags that emboss the contact info.

TIP: Think about the size of the tag in respect to your contact info:

If you have a lengthy name or address, then the round and heart-shaped tags are probably useless to you. The manufacturer will have to print the info in smaller letters in order to make it fit, making it harder to read.

If you have a lot of letters on a single line, stick with a bone-shaped or rectangular tag.

Make Sure Your Pet Isn’t Allergic

Just as we humans have metal allergies, dogs can, too.

If you notice any sort of skin irritation where the tag hangs below the dog’s chin once you attach it, it could be an allergic reaction.

This is rare, but you might want to keep an eye on your dog when a new collar and tags arrive just to be safe.

If you just want to keep the contact info basic, you might want to get a collar with your dog’s name and your telephone number embroidered on it.

Keep in mind that the lettering will eventually get dirty and you’ll need to wash it, which may cause the embroidery stitches to loosen.

These come in five different collar colors and 15 different thread colors. Easy to read!

You can also choose from X-small to Large collar sizes.
